Mike Fairley - Global Trends
Mike has the pulse of
the global label market and gave an account of an industry which still grows
and continues to find ways to innovate and differentiate. Great examples of companies overseas who had stepped
“beyond the 4-colour label” through innovation were part of a number of case
studies Mike ran through with the attendees.
His enthusiasm for the future of the industry was infectious yet his
warning to everyone around differentiation was not lost.

Gavin Williams - Packaging Industry Trends Sustainability and the Packaging Convenant
Gavin took the
audience through “what keeps end users up at night” and there were many
business issues that were either a threat to the PS label or an immense
opportunity.
Container deposit
legislation is a key trend where the Government is expecting brand owners to
“own their package for life”. This means
a growth in container deposits (or return bounty) and the collection systems that
go with that to ensure the brand owner is only paying for their package, not
that of a competitor.
The Packaging Covenant
is alive and well and Mike took us through how that will likely be the focus
for a sustainable future until the Carbon Tax begins to increase its burden on
manufacturers. Recyclability is still
important to brand owners, the reduction of packaging weight will end up
providing more cost benefit through freight weight reductions than landfill.

Saul Eslake - Economic Update
Saul is a regular
speaker at LATMA Conferences and made our “patchwork economy” more
understandable. Looking at our
population growth curve, our competitors to the north and the impact of mining
and services and how our economy is changing.
We’re in for heady times and Saul gave some very specific items to be
managing and improving, a real benefit for those who attended this session.

Michael Taylor - Implementing Lean Manufacturing - A guide for owners and business leaders
Michael got right down
to “brass tacks” and raised specific items to improve, all relative to our
industry. The focus was “doing the tough
stuff” and the questions posed were proof that the session had an impact. Employee engagement, investment vs waste,
time form implementation to benefit, all were topics covered with case studies
and strong examples. An excellent
session.

Ric Wilmot - Business Improvement Create Value & Improve You Profitability
Ric was billed as “the
consultant’s consultant”, which normally screams bordom, right? Wrong!
Ric was probably one of the more powerful and impacting speakers on the
day, with plenty to offer on building differentiation. He took everyone through how to build value
with your customers, not just relationship, and use that to protect profit when
the next “low price label merchant” comes walking through the door.

Ray Scicluna - Differentiate - Stand Out From the Crowd
Ray was the owner of a
number of franchises, Video Ezy being one, and took us through his personal
journey as an owner-operator and how he handled the struggle to differentiate
against the larger branded chains. A
focus on service and the right people made him successful and his approach to
life gave him balance, which came across in one heck of a presentation. A very personal account with some very real
clues which translate directly to running a label business. The pivotal question was “What’s your point
of difference”? “If you can’t say it in
the first 2 minutes after being asked, you don’t have one”. “If you don’t have one, get one.”
Matt Church - Lifestyle Speaker - Listen to your body, it's telling you something
The impacts of stress
on the body are not always evident on the outside, not always..... Matt’s session was a light but informative
session on how to recognize the stresses of running our own business and then
manage them. Diet, sleep, exercise and a
healthy perspective on life were uncovered in detail and gave us all some “food
for thought” on whether we’re looking after the only reason we work, our health
and our family. Remember, 2 ltrs of
water per day, 6 hours of deep REM sleep (7 for stressed suppliers), almonds
each day and jelly babies 4 hours and 8 hours after we wake up. What a great session.......
